Carports falling down from all the heavy snow pack on xmas eve in Sherwood, OR

Heavy weight of snow caves in carports

At around 4:30 this evening we got a knock on our door. It was a neighbor telling us the carports at our apartment complex here in Sherwood were falling down from the weight of the snow on top of them. We needed to get our car moved asap. One carport had already fallen on a truck. A young boy with his dad were in it. The boy was screaming with fear but was otherwise unhurt and they both got out safe. As we ran to try and get our car moved, more carports were coming down around us. You could hear and feel the boom of them crashing down. Our apartment managers were working hard to help clear the area, notifying car owners and assisting in getting the cars that were stuck under the car ports from snow drifts by shoveling out snow. Neighbors started pitching in, as time was running out. We started running to knock on doors, pushing cars and shoveling snow. At one point, one carport crashed down just seconds after men shoveling snow from behind the cars got out from under it. We were one of the lucky ones. We got our car out but not everyone was so lucky this Christmas eve. Here are some pictures of the aftermath.

A carport at Stark Street Crossing came down on Christmas Day and totalled my car. The complex's ins. co. invokes "Act of God." The manager states I will need to contact my own ins. co. The complex owners offer NO assistance. Morally repugnant!

As a follow up...there are a total of 5 carports that have now fallen down. It's not a pretty sight. There is lots of clean up and work to be done once this snow melts!
