5/28/09- 11 am EDT (8 am PDT) National Hurricane Center has located the first Tropical Depression of the Season. This kicks off the '09 Atlantic hurricane season 3 days early. NHC indicates Tropical Depression One will become Tropical Storm Ana in the next 12 hours. Current sustained winds are 35 mph (39 is Tropical Storm strength) and is heading NE at 17 mph. For you that are plotting at home the center of circulation is at 37.3 N 71.0 W. Although this storm does not pose any threat to land it is still a hazard to shipping interests. TD #1 or TS Ana is expected to become Extratropical during the weekend.

NHC's Fourth advisory indicates it is still a Depression as of 5 am AST (1 am PDT). Winds still at 35 mph heading ENE at 15 mph. Pressure at 1006 mb and the center is now at 38.9 N 66.3 W.

NHC's Third advisory is in and as of 11 pm AST (7 pm PDT).TD #1 is still a Tropical Depression. Winds are still at 35 mph and is now head ENE at 16 mph. Pressure is hovering around 1006 mb and the center is at 38.1 N 67.8.

The chance for TD #1 to upgrade to Tropical Storm strength is slowly diminishing. The storm is encountering heavy wind shear and moving into colder waters.

This is the third consecutive year where the season started early. Andrea in '07, Arthur in '08. Andrea was only a Subtropical Storm, and Arthur was Leftovers from Alma from the Eastern Pacific.

The third advisory it is likely that TD #1 will be bumped up to Tropical Storm strength 39-73 mph which it will be given the name Ana. The next storm after Ana would be named Bill.
