Friends of Trees staged a "Honk for Shade" event to raise awareness of a the value of shade trees during the 2009 heat wave in Portland Oregon. Volunteers waved signs while passing motorists honked and hollered their support. And Outreach Coordinator Greg Tudor used an Infrared Thermometer to measure the road temperature in the shade and in the sun - demonstrating a nearly 50 degree difference and thus proving the Chinese proverb "The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago, the second best time is now."
