4 year-old Caleb, son to Heather

Homeless Family in Urgent Need for Help

My friends Sharon Gregory, her daughter Heather Fowler, and Heather's 4 year-old son Caleb are staying at a cheap motel tonight, thanks to St Vincent DePaul. But only for a night or two due to the lack of funds. They were evicted from their home in Boardman, Oregon because they were four months behind on their rent. Sharon is receiving aid from the state of Oregon, but it wasn't enough to pay all of their bills. She has a number of health-issues which is very costly. Her daugther Heather has been taking care of her mother and her son with no time for herself or no time to work outside the home. She is a single mother.

They signed-up for HUD to help them find an affordable home here in The Dalles, Oregon where I live. I helped them pack their things into a 26' U-Haul trailer to move into a 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom manufactured home in The Dalles that was promised to them through HUD. When they arrived with the loaded moving van, they found out that there were people still living there. Due to some miscommunications between the manager Larry Black and the owner of the home, the people still living there were not given a 72-hour notice to move out until after the day he said it would be vacant Aug 3rd. The owner now says she wants $500 down before Sharon and Heather can move in. Meanwhile it's costing them $39.95 a day for each day they have the U-Haul truck unloaded. In desperation, Sharon requested help from CAP (an organization to help find homes for the homeless). They told Sharon that they were out of funds. So with the little money they have left, they have to find storage for their things, so they can return the U-Haul truck. I said they could stay with me no longer than a week because I only have a one-bedroom apt. Any longer than that, I would risk eviction.

I thought bringing their plight to this news team would shed some light on their urgency and need for emergency assistance. The state of Oregon has helped them to a limit, but do not have enough funds to place them in a home today. I hope and pray that their story will be aired and put some pressure under our congressman and other politicians who can make a difference in their well-being. This has taken a toll on Sharon's health.

Thank you for allowing me to summit my story. Sincerely, Ricky Elliott

What is wrong with you people, this family is asking for your help! Where is all the links for help? Do you know how hard it is to ask for help? All of your bad help is only making it worse for this family. Stop it and put in links that can help them

Please pray for Sharon, her 2 adult sons (1 is incarcerated in Oklahoma), Heather, and Caleb desperately need Jesus. They stayed with us for a while and this family have many problems, and truely need to give their hearts to the Lord Jesus.

Lance says ... on Thursday, Aug 20 at 12:42 PM

I've seen both... the people who suck the system and those who have done everything 'right' and the rug was pulled out from under them. Unfortunately the 'suckers' have bled the system dry and left nothing for those who need "temporary" help.

I guess those of you that r calling them fat etc,did you know you could have a condition that makes u that way? (I am a skinny girl btw-so no I dont have that condition) but shame on you ppl

And yes I am thankful that I have a Heavenly Father who will be the one to cast judgement and I don't have the burden to deal with those who are so evil to allow their venom to spew all over those around them! JESUS REIGNS!

did anyone see a request for money? I didn't! maybe they just wanted a few names of organizations that might help these people. ever think of that? http://www.sheltered.org/ they help homeless families regain their independence. 360) 737-0300

Deeanna says ... on Wednesday, Aug 19 at 11:53 AM

I think that all these people who have rude msg's should make sure their names are posted very clearly, why hide behind anonymous? so when hard times hit them and they need help we can all say NO go eat a twinkie! You sicken me!

Stephanie, I do not believe you have a degree.

Stephanie says ... on Tuesday, Aug 18 at 2:40 PM

I have been hit so hard that my monthly food stamp benefit is more than my income and I have a degree w/ a family of five (I think that the poor get fat because all they can by is food to comfort themselves) Its sad people should be thankful and help

Stephanie says ... on Tuesday, Aug 18 at 2:38 PM

I cannot believe all the judgement!! Some of the comments are just rude. Alot of people are being affected by the economy I have had the same job for 10 yrs and I am homeless now too with hr reductions & the cost of living still increasing.

momof7 says ... on Tuesday, Aug 18 at 10:27 AM

It won't do any good to remind people that middle class can become homeless, also. There are always unique circumstances, and nobody has the right to point fingers at another and judge which one is more deserving of help.

Why don't they just keep the U-haul and live in it. It isn't like they are going to pay for it anyway. Just flatten the tires and move in.

abriley88 says ... on Monday, Aug 17 at 6:19 AM

They most likely need to find a new landlord. 72 hour notices don't always work that quickly. Sadly, they may have to find a new community. This one seems to be a bit too perfect. Not even knowing all the situation, you condemn? I am appalled!

abriley88 says ... on Monday, Aug 17 at 6:10 AM

I am thankful I have never personally experienced the venom I see in what has been written here. You can't see yourself ever in this position? Hang around. Perhaps it will be your own children. Chances are, then, you'll think people should stip up!

I love the way that people have to drag the Christian community into this and of course, start tearing them apart. If these people are having a hard time, let the people who want to help, help. If you feel that they are trying to scam you, don't help

Why would an atheist pray for someone? While we're at it... why not burn a human sacrifice to please the gods to assist these under achievers?

for those who have wrote those negative comments about someone having a hard time in there life, you're the one that needs help maybe you could pray for them and that doesn't cost a cent meanwhile i will pray for them and you as well..

throwin stones says ... on Monday, Aug 10 at 11:11 AM

Wow. The best part of the comments is that I bet those making comments about the physical weight of the women and their laziness are those that are loving and forgiving "Christians." Did the child ask for any of this venom?

Anonymous says ... on Monday, Aug 10 at 10:35 AM

I have a hard time reading what has been writen here. I thought that the story was sad, but then I saw all the evil poured out onto this blog. None can judge, we all have fallen short. I pray for those who dont know what I am talking about. Yeshua

I, myself, will never be in this family's shoes. I don't make bad decisions that jeopardize my future (not go to college, have children I can't support, be lazy, nor sustain expensive health problems). I cannot empathize with dead weight.

The first thing someone should teach that little brat is to keep his tongue inside his mouth where it belongs.

Peaceful says ... on Sunday, Aug 9 at 7:44 AM

We are all part of the same community. Maybe someone could step up and teach instead of criticize. It is our responsbility to care for our neighbors but we get to decide how we are comfortable helping. I hope for peace in our community.

Scam Adams says ... on Sunday, Aug 9 at 7:41 AM

Yep, it's a scam, allright. Don't send 'em a plug nickel. They got themselves into this situation and they should be able to get themselves out. McDonalds and Taco Bell have Help Wanted signs out. Everyone seems to want the Gov't Dole.

Anonymous says ... on Sunday, Aug 9 at 5:54 AM

I am sorry for the family and I am more sorry for the comment that I posted yesterday about the twinkys and obama I hope them the very best and good luck to them in this hard time of need I just hope it is not just another scam

Anonymous says ... on Saturday, Aug 8 at 10:10 PM

We have to be careful to not become so sinical in these hard times. Yes, there are scams out there, but do we turn our backs on all in need because we MIGHT be scammed? And give me a break...what does a person's weight have to do with paying bills?

Anonymous says ... on Saturday, Aug 8 at 6:10 PM

I agree with the last comment. KARMA does suck! I don't know the circumstances either. But what I do know is that a child is involved and regardless of how we all feel about the mother and gma his well-being is very important. I wish them the best!

Anonymous says ... on Saturday, Aug 8 at 1:44 PM

Wow I cant believe how some of you are acting i hope that never happens to you if it does i hope you get treated the same way!! All you saying bad things cause you never been in the same shoes remember karma sucks!!!!!

The Landlord says ... on Saturday, Aug 8 at 3:54 AM

Guess what the rental house in Boardman looked like after they finally got uprooted? What a mess! It will cost Thousands to repair the damage and take weeks. Can't be rented in the meantime. Losers. Good riddance.

Anonymous says ... on Friday, Aug 7 at 11:45 PM

mabe they should have payed ther rent and put the twinkys down and went to work the state can only do so much for lazy people (BUT OBAMA WILL SAVE THEM)

anonymous says ... on Friday, Aug 7 at 3:11 PM

Im shocked to hear how mean people are. What if it was your family that was in that same situation, would'nt you want them to receive help? Not everyone is fortunate to have a roof over their heads,

nunya says ... on Friday, Aug 7 at 2:30 PM

I can't believe how scathing some people are. It is so much harder to be thin when you don't have the income to buy nutritious food. I don't remember reading where the family asked for any handouts either. What a good friend you are Ricky.

Highly Skeptical says ... on Friday, Aug 7 at 1:53 PM

This could very easily just be yet another money scam. I'd caution anyone tempted to donate anything to these people to thorooughly research the situation before contributing. BTW, that was not a good picture of the boy with his tongue out.

newshoes says ... on Friday, Aug 7 at 11:41 AM

Wow, mom and g'ma aren't supermodels so they don't deserve help? Ricky your friends are lucky to have you in their court. If the shelters in PDX are full they may be able to find help in an outlying county, to give them some time to sort things out.

Agree2 says ... on Friday, Aug 7 at 8:55 AM

Yeah, mom and gma look very well fed. This brings up an issue dear to me. Why do we keep people alive who have such health issues that prohibit them from feeding their kids? In my day, we'd bring them straight to the tar pits!

HORSELVR says ... on Friday, Aug 7 at 8:46 AM

Okay people- there is no reason to be mean spirited or cruel. You don't know the circumstances behind their situation so don't start tearing them apart. Be thankful that you aren't in their shoes.

Agree says ... on Friday, Aug 7 at 8:03 AM

I agree with the other comments. The grandmother & mother look like they eat enough as it is, use some of that money to feed the child! I've been a single, young mother for 13yrs and have NEVER been homeless or unable to provide for my son!

anonymous says ... on Friday, Aug 7 at 6:06 AM

The state provides caregivers for free to those who need it - so look into that so the daughter can go to work and provide! Its time to stand on their own feet and quit asking for handouts. That only goes so far!

Anonymous says ... on Friday, Aug 7 at 6:06 AM

Yours is not the only bleeding heart story in this economy! Often in a situation like this I find there is always a reason why they ended up homeless! It sounds like these people might need to step up a bit-stop asking for handouts
