Seaside beach and riverbanks strewn with dead fish 9/20/09

Something's Fishy in Seaside

Dead fish litter the shoreline in Seaside, and explanations abound as to how they come to be there. The average size of the fish is 8 to 10 inches long. It was hard for me to identify what kind of fish they were.

Some say they are the overflow from sardine fishing boats who were off the coast on Sunday. They speculate that when the nets come in the smallest fish get crushed and mangled by the larger ones and fall through the bottom. Someone else said there was a sudden algae bloom in the river, and the fish suffocated for lack of oxygen.

The seagulls and other birds were leaving them alone. Possibly they had already eaten their fill.

Whatever caused it, I was not prepared for the carnage that stretched out before me as I took my dogs for their evening stroll. Luckily they knew enough to let the dead fish alone.

I think I'll pass on the beach walks for a couple of days. By today they will really begin to smell bad.
I have some additional close up photos, but can't seem to get them to load.

I never got an authorative explanation, but the "word on the street" is that the fish were probably dumped by one of the sardine trollers which had been fishing close by. They may have over-fished and dumped a load so as not to be fined.

On Saturday, October 3, the fish had apparently reached the proper stink level, and my collie wanted to eat them, and my yellow lab wanted to roll in them. Before I could stop them they had both delighted in the rotting mess and baths were in order!

9/29/09 So far I still haven't heard a reasonable explanation. I will check with the Aquarium tomorrow. Most of the fish are gone now, and the beach smells ok. I looks like we're about to start getting red tides (also a bit smelly).

We've been coming to Gearhart for 35 years and never seen the beach full of dead fish like Sat., Sept.19th. What is the official explanation?

We were in Gearhart (about 3 miles N. of Seaside) over the weekend. Went out on the beach saturday night about midnight and there were silver fish washed up at least hundreds, as far as the eye could see. We took lots of pics.

Me and my Fiancee went to spend the day at Seaside today. As we arrived in town we noticed a fishy smell in the air. Went for a walk on the beach and saw tens of thousnads of dead fish. Went to Cannon Beach and there were no dead fish down there. odd

Yes, I reported this on Sunday AM. And when they arrived, the river crabbing stopped. We had been getting three or four a day, and then Saturday, nothing. I notified ODFW, but have heard nothing back. The fish were herring.
