The end of summer comes, and in Seaside, Oregon, like other coastal towns, the kids head back to school, and the tourists return to their homes. Shops and restaurants serve fewer but more familiar faces. The serenity returns to the seashore, and only a handful of "locals" and birds and a few happy dogs remain to witness the glorious sunsets that will embrace us until the chill winds force us back to our firesides. Some homes will begin to smell of soups and bread and cookies. Wise "coasties" will prepare candles and oil lamps in anticipation of occasional power outages brought by winter storms, and Halloween decorations will delight the kids riding home in school buses. Winter is on the way.
