I am a tenant of public housing . I am a single mother of two boys one that just turned 3 and the other will turn 8 soon. I am writing to simply because I feel that I have tried every other venue to address my concerns and I do not know where else to go to get something done, and to get it done right.
I put a work order for a window that would not close, I do live on the bottom floor and not being able to close my window as a single mom scared me greatly that I started sleeping on the living room floor near the front door. When I realized nothing was going to be done about this matter I got on a stool and looked at the wood surrounding the window (I’m very nearsighted and wear glasses) to my horror I realized that the wood was rotted which means the ceiling is possibly to. I promptly went upstairs to my neighbors apartment to tell them and asked to see their floor I was aghast to see that the floor was rotted under the fridge and the had the same crumbles falling on the window sill as I had on mine. They said they put in work orders for 9 years to no avail(the speak barely any English have their kids help).Thursday 10-8-09 the maintenance supervisor(who I thought was the inspector) wants the resident maintenance guy to take out the dry wall and see the actual damage( in a building that was made around 1970 or prior which are known to have asbestos and lead hazards). The maintenance supervisor called me today made me feel harassed Tried to argue with me when I was only explaining how my youngest child is a severe asthmatic well has a disorder that gives him severe migraines that have had him hospitalized over 4 times in his short life.I told him that I am worried that he will end up in the hospital if they tear out that drywall while we are still living under the roof. When he would not let me speak I told him that I felt that we could no longer speak to each other and that I would need to speak to his supervisor and then he proceeded to hang up on me, and make the arrangements to have the maintenance man, to open up my wall just to look at the damage that is so easy to see with out opening it up. They are not moving me out of here and I have no place to go while they do this. I declined the maintenance man to, in the maintenance mans words “rip out some wood from your wall” last Friday at five pm without any notice(they gave me zero notice prior to knocking on my door). I am very worried since I was told that they were just going to do that while we were still in the apartment and put plastic over it, and leave it for another department to work on .My youngest child that just turned three suffers from asthma and If you look at the place at the window where it is rotten and pulling away from the ceiling you can see mold. In fact you can smell it when you walk in my apt. If they open that wall up and just leave it; it will inevitably land my sons and or me in the hospital with severe respiratory issues. If you can help in any was please do so thank and you for your time and consideration
e violation for almost 2months and I have very vivid photos of the damage…after all a picture is worth a thousand words
All i want is for my family to be safe

You have EVERY RIGHT to be angry and scared. But, don't let the fear control you. Let your anger be your strength. Contact a legal aide organization for renters immediately.(look in the front of the phone book, in Social Services.
