Seal on Seaside Beach

As of 10/9/09 this seal has been suffering near the Seaside cove for 9 days. Some people have helped her by brining her a dog dish and water, but the Aquarium frowns on that stating that "nature should take its course."

The Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) makes it illegal to hunt, capture, collect or kill any marine mammal. Violation of the MMPA can result in civil penalties of up to $10,000 or criminal penalties of up to $20,000 or up to 1 year in federal prison.

That is the main reason no one will step up to euthanize the Seaside seal. No one wants to take this on.

This seal is dying in a public spot in full view of the residents and tourists and whatever camera crews come by. SHE/HE IS SUFFERING! Any vet could humanely put her down, but the risk is too great.

Sightseers are at risk of contracting leptospirosis, a HIGHLY INFECTIOUS DISEASE most easily transmitted by coming in contact with infected urine (which in this case is in the sand surrounding the seal's area). I can't tell you how many people have come barefooted with their kids to look. I've watched them! Only a few people bother to read the signs.

I believe the poor thing should be put down and removed from the beach, or taken to a facility where she/he could get proper care. At the very least, she/he should be fenced off to avoid spreading infection.

You people, really! I am a freaking Sea-Lion not a seal! And I was just resting... next thing I know, all you smelly hippies are crowding around me! I was trying to get to the coffee shop and check my myspace, so much for that!

The Sea Lion is gone. According to the Aquarium, he/she left of her own accord early Saturday morning. I apologize for mistakenly identifying him/her as a seal. It was a sea lion. It probably did have a bacterial infection.

Trapper thanks for contacting me about the seal-skin jacket. I'm loving it, especially since the temprature is supposed to fall tonight.

I was completely outraged to hear in the animal curelity being done right in front of onlookers. At least the humane soceity should have done something. Where is the animal police when you need them.

My hands are nice and warm, though. There are too many sea lions and they need to be harvested to save the salmon and steelhead. Pull thy head out, please.

The locals dumped salt water over the seal and gave it fresh water to drink. It got better and swam out to sea Sat. a.m. Trapper, your comment is offensive and cruel. You must be a very lonely and miserable human being! Or should I say...animal!?

The seal is now off the beach and I have a couple new pairs of sealskin gloves. Just in time for winter.
