At the conclusion of WWII in 1949 the state donated 102 acres to be designated a National Cemetery. Subsequent donations in 1952 brought the total to 201 acres. The final parcel of 68 acres was dedicated in 1995. Construction started in 1950 and the first burial was in 1951. There are now 108,766 Veterans buried there. It is a beautiful setting on Mt. Scott, in SE Portland high above the city.
