Willamette National Cemetery 11/11/2009

Veterans Day Willamette Nat'l Cemetery

At the conclusion of WWII in 1949 the state donated 102 acres to be designated a National Cemetery. Subsequent donations in 1952 brought the total to 201 acres. The final parcel of 68 acres was dedicated in 1995. Construction started in 1950 and the first burial was in 1951. There are now 108,766 Veterans buried there. It is a beautiful setting on Mt. Scott, in SE Portland high above the city.

I, too, visited loved ones at Willamette Cemetary on Veterans' Day. The grass was tall and very wet, soggy in fact, but that didn't stop me from placing flowers on a couple of graves. Good pics.
