CarToys Lies on Black Friday

Deception on Black Friday

I thought Katu should know about my experience this morning at CarToys Jantzen Beach.

Like many Portlander's I went through the adds yesterday. I chose CarToys as my early morning line. Even though it would be cold, wet and probably windy, on offer were free phones to the first 100 customers.

Being a fantastic Black Friday deal I decided to join the throngs in the early am. We could've gone to best buy for a great TV sale, but no, we chose CarToys.

I got up at 4am, stayed in line for 2 freezing and damp hours waiting for my chance for a free phone, remember, the add stated the first 100. I was very happy because I was 4th in line and sure to get my free phone.

When the doors finally opened, I was told that the price had changed from free to $149. This is blatantly deceptive. The store hadn't even put a poster in its window to let its freezing would be customers know. There was no retraction in the newspaper, even though I was told the add had been printed 2months prior but never pulled. They just pointed to the small print saying these prices could change at anytime.

Basically they couldn't care less that they'd truly inconvenienced me and others and lied. It's a horrible tactic to get people into their doors.

And finally, when we tried to call the CarToys corporate office, the phone number had been disconnected.

even if its 1st 10, he was 4th on the line!

I noticed the ad says first 10 people, not first 100 people. Many of us get so excited by big, bold letters in ads, we overlook the details. I read the ad, get interested, then LOOK for all the fine print & exclusions. It's there...

They need to be turned in to Consumer Fraud.

Mickey was emailed w/in 2 hrs of leaving the store to correct this as it was a misunderstanding at the store. He came in that same day to take advantage of the offer we extended him. We're very sorry this happened and wish everyone a Happy Holiday!

We apologize for your experience. There was some confusion regarding this qualifying due to other rebates, but it does. The store will contact you to honor the promotion and offer you an add’l free accessory pkg. Sincerely, Jeff Johnson

The BBB website currently rates this particular store with an "A" (A good, F bad) and no complaints in past 36 months.

Call the BBB (better buisness beurau) (sp) and see if they can do anything about it

That's why they're called "Sucker Ads". Suckers. lol

As long as the companies get their money. I also want to see what the average prices are throughout the season, then watch for a huge markup then discount sale on Black Friday. Is it the same tactic as liquidation sales?

Thank you for taking the time to post this. I hope all those folks who stood in line with you turned around and went home without buying anything once they learned of the deception. THAT would have been justice!

Too good to be true? Hardly. A cheaply made $149 phone (overpriced to begin with) FREE with qualifying activation. (likely an overpriced contract/rate) Nothing unusual about that. That kind of deal is offered every dang day.

The ad says first 10. Not 100.

I agree with AFCanesFan-I had same thing happen with Office Max-they had an incredible deal advertised and when I went in and went to pay for it it rang up different they just pointed to fine print saying not held responsible for ad errors! Poor Tast

AFCanesFan says ... on Monday, Nov 30 at 11:38 AM

It's easy to make comments like the "too good to be true" one on here, but you must realize that no matter how you cut it, this is poor business practice, and customers have every right to rat them out on it.
