MILWAUKIE, Ore.—A rather confused Norther Flicker woodpecker pecks away, or "drums" on a galvanized metal gas vent flue.
It is a rattling sound that many residents around the Portland metro area would hear in the early morning or sometimes throughout the day between March and June or July.
The Northern Flicker woodpecker uses the "drumming" technique to attract a mate. Unfortunately for homeowners, it is a rude morning wake-up call.
