Two of my former foster kitties, BJ and Bart. SO CUTE!

If You Have Love to Spare, Foster a Cat or Dog!

Many people do not realize that there is a way to help shelter animals that does not involve adopting one outright or contributing money. A lot of cats and dogs need to go into temporary foster homes in order to facilitate training and socialization that just isn't possible in the sometimes-chaotic shelter setting. Fostering an animal is a great way to dip your toe into animal ownership, if you are not sure that you are completely ready to adopt a pet for life. You will get used to having a furry friend around the house and administering to its needs, and then have time to reflect when it is adopted.
Additionally, most shelters provide the food and other needed materials for the pet, so you need not pay anything out of pocket to help! All you need to give is some time and love. And because the animal is placed in your home, you can add fostering to your volunteer activities while still keeping your usual daily activities.
People ALWAYS ask me, 'How can you give up an animal after they live with you for a few weeks?' My perspective is, I am HAPPY to 'give up' an animal for adoption and see them leave my home, because that means there is then a space in my home to save another needy animal! That makes me happy and I feel satisfied that I am making a difference. I urge everyone who has the inclination to contact their local no-kill animal shelter and ask about fostering. The joy you the animals bring you in return in priceless.
