One week ago today my son, Jacob, was involved in a serious mountain bike accident while we were camping. He and a group of others were dropped off about 8 miles above our camp site with the idea that they would bike downhill back to camp. Because they were going downhill, they quickly gained great speed. Jacob lost control of his bike going around a corner and crashed. Because of the speed involved (he was going about 45 to 50 mph) he was thrown nearly 70 ft beyond his bike. The impact broke his nose, his shoulder, 3 teeth and gave him a very, very bad case of "road rash"!! As you will see from the attached pictures, he was not a pretty sight!! It is pretty amazing that he lived. My husband rushed him off the mountain and was met in Estacada by paramedics who then called Life Flight. At the hospital they were able to reestablish Jacob's teeth by installing a metal plate. He received stitches in several places & was bandaged up. We spent the next 4 days on the Trauma Critical Care floor where he recuperated. Several doctors & nurses made the comment that Jacob only lived because he had worn his helmet. I thought that in itself might be newsworthy. So many of our youth do not wear a helmet and yet they can be lifesaving. At the same time, we have many, many dental visits to come in order to reconstruct Jacob's mouth. It was damaged more so than just the teeth that were knocked out. The teeth were not whole teeth when they were found, they were partial teeth that were put back in. In addition, his lower teeth have been broken off in odd layers - many have exposed nerves now and are also only partial teeth. His tongue had incredible lacerations, one tooth was actually discovered in his tongue!! He is unable to eat anything solid, he can only drink via a syringe. Unfortunately, we do not have any insurance, medical or dental. I am not entirely too concerned with the hospital bills - I can pay on those for the rest of my life and just be happy that they saved my sons life. I am concerned that Jacob needs so much dental work. Without insurance the task of getting his teeth repaired properly & in a timely manner seems so daunting!!!
We are looking for anyone that might be able to donate their dental services or help us by allowing services at a discount and we can make payments.
