This is plastic waste on the beach at Lincoln City

Plastic waste washing ashore in Oregon

Last weeks high tides and storms brought plastic debris to Oregon beaches. I found a significant amount of debris from Lincoln City to Pacific City. I gathered up about a half cup but there must be tons of it. Maybe this is part of the Great Pacific garbage Dump. It is only at the high water mark and runs the entire length of the beach north and south. It also appears as if some oil is on the beach as well. It floats like plastic and is deposited at the high water line just like the plastic. I have seen oil on beaches before and this looks like oil.
I took this video and pictures on 5/7/10.
This plastic can not be cleaned up. Much of it is the size of BB's and round like it is broken down. It has contaminated miles of beaches.
Even if we could clean this up it would happen again on the next storm or strong ocean current. This is shocking and terrible to see the waves carry small plastic trash and deposit it on the beaches.

Have you ever been to Mexico where the cruise ships dump there wastes right into the ocean, everything from flip flops to diapers. My parents would say that if you would dig up the Oregon beach you would find a our history in oil and plastics.

Soon enough petroleum wells will run dry and we'll be left scrounging through land fills and oceans to collect the precious plastic garbage for recycling. When all the fish have been eaten, the fishing fleets will simply net plastic for a pay check
