My son Don was an Oregon Journal delivery boy when Mt. St. Helens blew. Neither rain, nor sleet, nor St. Helen's ash slowed the delivery of this hard working young man's papers.

Good to remember those days. I delivered the Oregonian my self in Newport for three years. Bike had no brakes at the end of the second year. That's all we had was rain and fog, at least we didn't have the ice and snow to worry about.

This sure brought back memories. I have a picture of my (then) 4 year old son, with his dust mask on, trying to make a sand castle from the ash his dad was hauling off the roof and out of the gutters. Thanks for sharing - and the memories.

I, too, was an Oregon Journal delivery boy when St Helens blew. I remember the cover photo when the crater first opened up. I also remember wearing a dust mask while riding my bike and the sound of the ash falling on a later minor eruption night.

I delivered the "Oregon Journal" too!! I remember one particularly bad freezing rain storm that was so bad, that my Momma had to take me around in my step-dad's 4x4 to get it done.

I too delivered the "Oregon Journal" in the day... I remember a particularly bad "Silver Thaw" (Freezing rain), and my Momma had to take me around in my step dad's 4x4 just to get it done
