Spent a day at the John Day Fossil Beds painted hills unit located 9 miles NW of Mitchell and 75 miles east of Bend. The scenery is amazing here and hiking trails are wonderful. There is a great little picnic area at the visitors center that you won't want to miss. The area reminds me of the old west. This is a wonderful day trip from Portland.

I went there last summer and it was truly amazing. I've lived in Oregon my entire life and never knew it existed until last summer.

Thanks for posting the pics! We went there when I was a kid, I'd forgotten how pretty it was.

Beautiful pictures. Thank you for posting them. We do live in a beautiful state, don't we? From the Oregon coastline, to the mountains and Cascade range, to the painted hills. Magnificent!
